Having been approached by Elemental Design on behalf of the foot care people Seton Scholl, Analysis by Firth carried out a finite element analysis on their Dual Action Foot File.
Seton Scholl required reassurance that the introduction of a hole into the handle of the Dual Action Foot File would not lead to breakage during use. In solving this problem we produced a full 3 dimensional finite element model from a supplied 2-D CAD drawing.
Under 3-point bending with a load of 10kgs applied the highest stresses occurred at the junction between the handle and the file blade.
Both Elemental Design and Seton Scholl were satisfied by our findings and conclusions and the hole in the handle of the Dual Action Foot File has now been adopted.
This demonstrates the flexibility of Finite Element Analysis and shows how it can be applied to a variety of situations.
