We recently performed a finite element analysis of the main support and actuator frame for a paper making press, as shown below. These frames are used in pairs, supporting pinch rollers, which squeeze the paper into flat, smooth sheets at high speeds.
The loading for this analysis is from a hydraulic actuator pushing outwards onto the bottom of the heavy beams shown in the figure on the left. The stresses generated by this load are shown in the second figure.
Using Mathcad, and the stresses obtained from the finite element analysis, a series of calculations were also produced to determine the fatigue life of the frame.
